Having removed weeds and invasives from the south berm of the KPVA retention, volunteers will broadcast a native seed mix in November 2024. The selected seeds are BioSwale/Raingarden Seed Mix from Native Connections in Kalamazoo, MI.
Per Native Connections, "Specifically designed for swales, detention basins, and raingardens, it has less emphasis on the tallest grasses and more emphasis on the showier, more common wildflowers."
A summary of the mix lists the scientific name, common, seeds per square foot, and percentage of seed, with the chart suggesting the hydrology, shade tolerance, soil type, bloom time, height and color,
A second document links each species in the mix to Michigan Flora Online, where you can see information and images of the respective grasses, sedges, rushes, and forbs. The mix contains about 63 native seeds per square foot.
