Opinion: Plant Native Trees or Perennials

Street names like Bent Tree and Oak Hill may become nostalgic as the trees age without replacement. Meanwhile, we pay landscapers to plant and maintain annual flowers. Perhaps we could alter the landscaping of the common islands to lessen the discordance.

At the end of the year, labor is required to remove the annuals, resulting in higher landscaping fees and more energy consumption to truck away the debris.

Perhaps we could consider planting something less maintenance-intensive, like acorns (i.e., young trees) and perennials instead. Or convert the islands into natural areas with pollinator plants and native flowers. While there would still be labor expenses involved as there are now, especially in the first couple years, in the long run the overall landscaping expense would likely be less. At the same time, we'd improve our local environment.
